As I stepped through the doors of Wanderlust Life after a fairly arduous journey navigating the back roads of North Devon I am immediately welcomed by the warm and sweet smell of a scented candle burning delicately on a near by countertop. It becomes clear that the shop is a complete extension of the teams creative intuition, with silk string necklaces and radiant jewels hanging strategically from every wall. The shop floor is interspersed with colourful woollen quilts, rattan baskets and green leafy botanicals. Several clusters of fairy lights give a soft glow to front of the shop and a faint hum of Gregory Porter singing ‘Hey Laura’ immediately puts me at ease. I take two steps forwards and encounter the hive of activity that is the workshop. I find a team of ladies hard at work ironing silk, handling jewels and mood boarding for their upcoming summer collection.
The back wall of the studio is collaged with colour swatches, bagged gemstones, etherial printed photographs and hand written annotations. This I am told is the beginning of the new summer collection. After learning more about the artisan process and inspirations behind the jewellery it dawns on me how these pieces of jewellery actually transcend aesthetics and serve to invoke power and intention within the wearer. The jewellery allows women to embrace their femininity and wear it as a badge of honour; a concept I am in love with.
The female comradery is abundant and the shop soon fills with laughter and a steady stream of inquisitive customers. All that’s left to say now is CHEERS! Here’s to embracing our female power, working together and supporting each other! (any excuse for prosecco on a Tuesday afternoon).
